Meet the Interns- Rachel Seitz

    My name is Rachel Seitz. I am from Houma, Louisiana. I am currently attending Nicholls State University where I am studying Secondary Education with a concentration in English. 

    Here at Hope for Opelousas I am a high school English intern for the second year in a row. This summer we have our high school students broken up into two groups, the first group being 9th and 10th graders and the second group being 11th and 12th graders. Our 9th and 10th graders are looking to accomplish creating an argumentative research essay on who their favorite NBA player and why. The students in this process will learn how to do: In-text Citations (Parenthetical Citations), Bibliography page (work cited page), How to properly conduct research, and then finally create their papers according to research done. 

    Our 11th and 12th graders are will be working on a “Scholarship Worthy” essay. This essay is based on a Community Service Project that they will actually go out into the community and do then write an essay according to their experience on the Community Service Project. The 11th and 12th grade group also reviews how to write a technically sound essay in order to make sure it is “Scholarship Worthy”.

    This being my second year at HFO I would have to say that I love it. For me personally it is a great experience on a classroom setting atmosphere. I get to practice different approaches on the best way to teach the students that I have at the time both educationally and behaviorally. It also gives me the chance to be surrounded by great co-workers and bosses who truly care about you as a person and your future as a future teacher. Not to mention the connections you get to make with the students as you watch them grow mentally in both life and in the classroom. 

    In the future I would really like to get a High School English job in a school who’s students really need someone to care about their future, to make sure that they are getting the best education possible. There is too many teachers out their who are just passing kids along not really caring what happens once they are out of their classroom. I want to be the teacher who never gives up on their students.
