Impact! That is what we are trying to do at Hope for Opelousas. Impact the lives of the students we serve.  But, how do we set the stage for big impact?  The answer, “BIG GOALS”- seemingly unattainable, high commitment, life shattering, will breaking, spirit awaking goals.  These experiences have the potential for big impact because the pursuit of them will typically crush you only to make you stronger.  This is how Hope for Opelousas teaches leadership to the inner-city kids in our Adventure Crew. The Adventure Crew opens up the world to students that live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in St. Landry Parish, the poorest parish in our state.

This summer we plan to take 6 chaperones and 18 middle school students enrolled in our Hope on the Hill after-school program on the adventure of a lifetime.  Our Goal: to canoe a 40 mile section of the majestic Buffalo River in Arkansas during the month of May 2011.  Achieving this goal will require a high level of commitment from both the chaperones and the kids. This includes: canoe training, outdoor skills seminars, participation in pre-trip planning, and being a positive contributing member of the Adventure Crew.  This isn’t just a fun-filled vacation, but also an experience designed to purposely put our students in adverse situations that will allow their true potential to be realized.  Though it will be difficult and trying, at the end of the trip the students will cherish this as one of the best experiences of their lives!
